Teatro Re

Details

Re Theatre, realized by surveyor Filippo Re Grillo from Licata between 1919 and 1921 and which bears his name. It was a place of culture and entertainment for rich and wealthy bourgeoisie of that time.
The foyer has a coffered roof, where composers and musical symbols are depicted.
The interior, which can accommodate about three hundred spectators, has the shape of a horseshoe and consists of the stage, the audience, two orders of stages in Art Nouveau style and the gallery. On the arc of the stage is frescoed the Swabian eagle, city coat of arms, while on the sides in two medallions are depicted the two Sicilian musicians of 1800: Vincenzo Bellini and Enrico Petrella.
The whole is concluded by a painted inscription composed by a teacher from Licata, Carmelo Ripellino.
Over the years the theatre was also used as a cinema and in 1930, during the screening of a film, for the fear of a fire, which at the end did not occur, the fearful spectators ran away and because of the crowds that occurred at the exit there were several deaths with the consequent closure of the theatre.
In the 1960, the theatre was partially opened and in 2003, following a complete restoration, it was reopened to public.
