Stagnone Pontillo is an archaeological site, took its name from the family that owned it.
It is a characteristic and singular work carved into rock.
Stagnone consists of a large compartment supported by three large tapered columns supporting the vault, under which there are several small niches which were probably occupied by lamps. On the vault there are two large holes to allow aeration of structure. On the columns there are some graffiti, alphabetic characters and engravings of years, which are evidence that the site has been frequented by different people.
There are several theories about its use. Initially it was thought to have been used as a monumental burial, maybe for presence of “grotticella” and “fossa” tombs of the Bronze age.
With Greek colonization, it could have been used as a religious center linked to water worship.
