Air-Raid Shelter was originally the basement of New castle, reused in World War II as a shelter.
The New castle, no longer existing, was one of the three fortresses of the city and was the seat of Comarca, Spanish military institution of the 17th century that gathered the armed units of the neighboring cities. Of the castle remain the surrounding walls, some accommodation and the little church of Madonna Ausiliatrice or of Quartiere (Our Lady auxiliary or of Quarter), so called because it was venerated by Spanish soldiers, gathered in a military “quarter”.
The refuge can be accessed from Marina or via Marconi and in the past was connected with Grangela. It is dug into rock and during the war was coated with bricks to give greater resistance against enemy attacks.
