PIAZZA ARMERINA. Famous for its mosaics. It rises on a hill at 700 meters high and preserves almost intact the historical center rich of palaces, churches and convents, set in the medieval town planning. The Norman quarter is very characteristic. It was colonized by the Lombards, who with their Gallo-Italic dialect have left a visible trace on the local language. The fame of the city is due to the archaeological discovery of an ancient Roman villa, called “villa del Casale”. We are located in the valley of Gela river, near the Philosophiana station stop along the road that during the Roman Empire connected Agrigento to Catania. The complex built between the 3rd and 4th cent. A. C. has mosaic flooring covering an area of 3,500 square meters and for its importance in 1997 was declared UNESCO Heritage. With the current restoration of the roofs, visiting the door you will come back to relive the sensations of that time. Looking at the mosaics we see a cross-section of the life of Imperial Rome with scenes of public and private life, horse races, gymnastics, myths and religious beliefs.
