Liberty Villas in Monserrato district, the charming hill of Licata, are located the artistic liberty villas that overlook the Mediterranean Sea and are surrounded by Mediterranean scrub. Villas were the holiday homes of the bourgeois and entrepreneurial families, linked to the sulphur trade.
The most famous villas are:
Villa Verderame: summer residence of Verderame family, owner of a sulfur refinery, was built by surveyor Filippo Re Grillo from Licata at the beginning of the 1900. The building has the shape of a Greek cross with three identical prospects. In the main façade there is a characteristic lantern-tower with an upper loggia and a double sloping roof.
Villa Urso: existing already in the second half of the 19th century and renovated at the beginning of the 20th century by Ernesto Basile, it was the residence of Cavaliere Urso. Privileged location on Monserrato hill. Also here, the main element is the lantern-tower, placed in the center of the entrance prospectus and ending at the top with a triple loggia and balcony.
Villa SapioRumbolo: residence of Cavaliere Angelo SapioRumbolo, designed and built at the beginning of the 1900 by surveyor Filippo Re Grillo from Licata. The entrance to the villa is allowed by a series of brick arches, which support the terraces where the building stands, architecture is inspired by the Renaissance style.
