San Calogero Rock Church

Details

The rock church of San Calogero is a church carved into the rock athe beginning it was named as S. Croce, dating back to the pre-Roman period and located under the church of Pompeii. It is a testimony of the first Christian presence in Licata, documented between the IV century a.C. by monks from East who officiated cult inside caves. Inside this church was found a fresco depicting the Saint, traces of landscapes and the crypt, while the statue of Saint Calogero which was placed in a niche was transferred to the church of Santa Maria La Vetere.
A few centuries later a nave was built outside the rock to enlarge the building, but it remained unused, also because of the Second World War that caused several damages to the structure.
