Carità Church

Details

The Church of Carità (charity), consecrated in 1622, is the seat of Maria SS. of Carità confraternity.
It contains interesting works of art: a painting of Sacred Heart of Jesus with the “SS. Angelo and Giuseppe Maria Tomasi” of unknown Sicilian of the first half of the XIX century and another portraying “Saint Camillo de lellis” work of the XIX century attributed to Giuseppe Spina from Licata, as well as the frescoes of the vault illustrating the mysteries of Madonna’s life: “Dormition”, “Assumption” and “Crowning”.
Alternating with altars, there are seven paintings on canvas depicting “Beatitudes”, while in the presbytery there are two paintings on canvas also attributed to Spina, depicting “Jesus and adulteress” and “the Samaritan”.
The main altar, in red marble of France with twisted columns made in 1739, houses the statue of Maria SS. of Charity realized in 1735 by sculptor from Campania Pietro Patalano, at the request of Sister Anna Maria Serrovira and Figueroa, abbess of the Benedictine monastery.
Of inestimable value is the rich artistic heritage preserved in the rooms of church. Inside a case is kept the expressive simulacrum of Christ at the Column of the 1700 which remains hidden all year, except for Holy Week when it is exhibited and carried in procession between Wednesday and Holy Thursday.
