CALTAGIRONE. Famous for its ceramic. It rises on the top of Erei mountains connected between the hills of S. Giorgio and S. Francesco in the XVI century by a big bridge.
It has an ancient origin, testified by documents and rich ceramic and metallic material that we can find in various museums.
The city was dominated by the Saracens and in 1030 was temporarily liberated by the Genoese. For gratitude Calatines (Caltagirone cirizens) inserted in their coat of arms the symbols of the great Maritime Republic. On 25 July 1090, the feast of St James Major, the city was definitively liberated by the Grand Count Ruggero the Norman, placing himself under the protection of the holy apostle.
It was a state-owned city, a title confirmed by the sovereigns John of Aragon and Ferdinand the Catholic granted it other privileges, including the sentence “mere and mixed empire”.
The most significant monuments are: the Church of S. Maria del Monte, in which at the end of staircase in May is celebrated “l’infiorata” (flower festival), the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo, the Regional Museum of Ceramics and others.
