AGRIGENTO. In 580 B.C. Greek populations from Gela, founded a new polis, city, giving the name of the river flowing in that place, Akragas, the present-day Agrigento. The urban plant is located on a valley where great temples are built (V cent. B.C.), works such as the temple of Hercules, Juno, Castor and Pollux, are majestic before our eyes. You can admire the imposing temple of Zeus too, with the Telamons and the Concordia that is preserved almost intact. Inside the so-called “Valley of the Temples”, heritage of humanity, there is the archaeological museum where there are prehistoric and pre-ellenian vases, classical Roman finds such as marble statues, attic vases and sarcophagi. Around the museum other monuments of the Roman period, such as the oratory, the forum and the Hellenistic-Roman quarter, in addition to the medieval church of Saint Nicholas are certainly worth a visit. Going up to the modern city there is to admire the medieval Cathedral with stratification up to the Baroque, the church of Santo Spirito, the Lucchesiana library and walking along the Athenian way you can reach the nineteenth-century theater entitled Pirandello.
